Escapism
In this particular work entitled “Escapism,” I explore the meaning of thE word through the lens of my experience and creative process. Escapism is defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as: The tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy. To me, escapism is an aura of feelings with a desire for freedom and a departure from the past—the search for a fresh start, new identity, and perspective. Escapism can be a means of avoidance to run from unpleasant feelings that leave one feeling out of control. These feelings are due to being blindly forced into a systemized world with unachievable expectations. Many people do not extend grace or patience in life, leaving one feeling defeated and an inconvenience to the people around them.
This work demonstrates the act of learning how to live within the rules of culture, and the actions needed to succeed. By looking inward, I uncovered how the mind communicates to the world and determines the desired perception from others. My work weaves together a vision of self-identity by considering previous identities, emotions, and circumstances as an act of expression through an aesthetically creative process.
